Is Tata Motors’ elixir of growth, Jaguar Land Rover, drying up?

Tata MotorsBSE 3.12 %' fourth quarter consolidated Ebitda missed Reuters consensus estimates by 5.5 per cent. The Net Profit was even more badly hit, coming in 49.8% below consensus estimates. Depreciation and interest increased on account of new product launches and higher net debt respectively.

Jaguar facing headwinds: The much larger JLR business reported margins below expectations, taking away the shine from better margins from the India standalone business.

JLR has seen pricing pressures across regions and this has been aggravated by its high concentration of diesel vehicles as well as inferior model mix. The quarter also bore the transient negative of model change related discounts of the Range Rover and Range Rover Sports which adversely affected margins. While Ebit margins have fallen in the quarter to a mere 2.6 per cent, depreciation load has risen with slower volume growth and new product launches.

India business improves but margin guidance too aspirational: The standalone India business delivered the best operational Ebitda margins for the December quarter since 2010. The benefits from gains in market share and industry volume growth were enhanced by cost-cutting initiatives, resulting in better margins. For the standalone business, the company has set an aspirational Ebit margin target of 6 per cent to 8 per cent versus 3.4 per cent in the last quarter. This will take some doing.

The pain is not waning anytime soon: The luxury passenger vehicle industry is facing unprecedented technological changes coming from electrification/tightening emission regulations, assisted driving, connected cars and even ride sharing. These forces entail enhanced R&D investments on the industry. Also most industry analysts believe EVs be margin dilutive. Also China which is the most important market for JLR has the most ambitious EV targets.
